Celebrating the Past  •  Embracing the Future

“Bayside has a rich history and heritage, of which the Bayside community is proud to celebrate and possess. Historic buildings, landscapes, places and objects all contribute to Bayside’s liveability, character and community cohesion. Protecting and celebrating these places is therefore a vital function of Council.”

— Bayside Council Officer, Ordinary Council Meeting, 23 April 2024

Who We Are

We are a group of Bayside residents advocating for the protection of our important heritage homes and neighbourhood character.

Our Aims

We encourage Bayside City Council to progress the heritage studies mandated by the Victorian Government and outlined in the Bayside Council Heritage Action Plan 2020, without further delay.

We seek to work collaboratively with residents and community groups throughout Bayside, drawing upon the skills, knowledge and enthusiasm of everyone who wishes to become involved.

We Are Not Anti‑Development

Appropriate development is essential for thriving suburbs. Our objective is to ensure that heritage buildings and neighbourhood character are protected while welcoming thoughtful and well-designed new development.

Experience has shown that once inappropriate zoning is in place, important homes can be lost forever. Our aim is to ensure appropriate planning controls and heritage overlays are established before that occurs, so the community can strike the right balance between preservation and renewal.

We want to retain the best of Bayside's historic character while embracing the very best of the future.

Current Campaign

Our current focus is Hampton and Sandringham.

Many residents have been shocked and distressed to see homes identified by heritage consultants demolished because protections have been delayed while the Bayside Heritage Action Plan remains incomplete.

We believe the residential areas surrounding Hampton and Sandringham's Major Activity Centres require urgent heritage protection while recognising the need to accommodate increased housing and welcome new residents.

In February 2024 we created a community petition urging Council to progress the heritage studies needed to implement these safeguards.

Thank you to the more than 1,000 residents who supported our petition.
